Daniel Horne: Genesis 1 is one of those passages people think they already know, and maybe that is exactly why we miss it. In beginnings, we go back to the opening of scripture and slow down long enough to actually sit with it, not to force an answer, not to flatten it, but to let it surprise us again. We follow the movement of the text as God speaks and creation answers, light, separation, order, goodness, a world taking shape by the word of God. And then we come to the detail that stopped us. God says, let there be light. He calls the light good. He separates light from darkness. He names day and night. And only later does he appoint the lights in the heavens to govern them. That is the kind of thing we rush past when the text becomes too familiar. But in this conversation, we let that tension breathe. We sit in the wonder of a world that is not random. not self-defining and not meaningless. A world spoken into being with purpose, a world layered with goodness, a world given to us as gift, calling and responsibility. And that is where perfume decay starts to mean something, because goodness comes first, not decay. God calls creation good before we ever drag our brokenness into it. So this is a conversation about beginnings, about wonder, about what happens when we stop reading the Bible like we have already exhausted it, and about learning to look at the world again with fresh eyes. This is beginnings. And maybe for us, that is where beginning again starts.
